SEBI's Demat 2.0 pilot does something rare: it moves a real, existing market onto-chain. India's corporate bond market is worth about $620 billion, and under the pilot those bonds are turned into digital tokens, with settlement run through the RBI's wholesale digital rupee.
The phased plan is the strategic part. This is not a token-and-forget stunt. Secondary trading and retail access are queued for later phases. That means the pilot is the first move in a sequence that ends with a nationally managed, tokenized bond market whose settlement is backed by a central bank digital currency.
The durable impact is structural. When a major economy tokenizes its corporate debt and settles it with a sovereign digital currency, it sets a template other large markets will have to answer. It also normalizes tokenized bonds as a baseline instrument rather than a niche DeFi product.
Read it in the crypto + AI frame: sovereign RWA tokenization is the bridge that turns 'crypto' into 'financial infrastructure with a national stamp.' That is the single most defensible use case in the space — and it is now running in a pilot, not a whitepaper.
